FSU Wrestlers Share Award
Author Unknown
BIG RAPIDS – Dan Hutcheson and Dave Surofchek, two All-America juniors
for the Ferris State University wrestling team, will share the Bulldogs’
“Outstanding Wrestler” award for the 1991-92 season.
The Bulldogs, under head coach Jim Miller, were 13-2 overall and won their sixth
straight Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference Championship. Ferris claimed
wins over Division I rivals Eastern Michigan, Toledo and Central Michigan during
the season. Miller was voted the regional “Coach of the Year” after
the Bulldogs won the NCAA Mideast Regional championship. He garnered the same
coaching award from the GLIAC.
Hutcheson and Surofchek led a group of six Bulldogs who placed at the NCAA Division
II Championships and pushed Ferris to an 11th place national finish. Hutcheson
finished fifth at 167-pounds to win All-America honors for the second time and
he completed the year with a 37-7 record. His biggest regular season win came
at the Las Vegas Invitational, a 10-5 decision over Iowa’s Mark Reiland
– the nations top ranked Division I wrestler at 167 pounds.
Hutcheson was the consensus choice for the “Outstanding Wrestler”
in both the GLIAC and Mideast Region.
Surofcheck, a three-time All-American at 190 pounds, placed fourth at the NCAA's
and finished with a 29-8 record. He also won the award for the most pins on
the FSU team with 17.
Oliver Richmond, a senior All-American at 118-pounds, placed fifth at the NCAA’s
and was named FSU’s “Most Improved” wrestler with a record
of 16-10. Denny Skatzka, the “Rookie of the Year” in the Mideast
Region and a national qualifier at 150-pounds, was named Ferris’ “Outstanding
Freshman.”
Other All-America Bulldogs included 134-pound junior Eric McCourt, 158-pound
senior Eric Bakey and senior heavyweight Mike Faulkner. Faulkner, 24-12-3, was
a two-time junior college All-American before transferring to Ferris. He was
a Bulldog All-American last year and completes his career with the distinction
of achieving the status during all four of his wrestling seasons.

Wrestlers Grab FSU’s 3rd GLIAC Title of 1987-88
By Kelly Rochette – Sports Writer
The 1987-88 GLIAC wrestling season is over. The dual meets have been completed
and the tournament is finished. The points have been recorded and the scores
are in. The team that shared the CLIAC title last year has full possession of
it this year – Ferris State University.
Ferris completed their title drive Saturday, Feb. 13, as they traveled to Grand
Valley for GLIAC tournament action and scored 81 team points, defeating Northern
Michigan University (63 points), Lake Superior State University (57) and Grand
Valley State University (52).
This year’s championship for FSU is the first out-right title since the
1983-84 season. Last year the Bulldog wrestlers shared the title with Grand
Valley.
Next up for the Bulldogs is the NCAA Division II Mideast Regional Championships,
which will be hosted by the University of Indianapolis on Saturday, Fe. 20.
Ferris finished the tournament with five of the 1- individual champions. At
142 pounds, Junior Tom Paveglio defeated both of his opponents, Remi Esordi
(GVSU), 4-1, and Ray Champion (NMU), 7-4 for first place.
Paveglio wrestled Esordi three times previously, losing all three, but Paveglio
said he went into his match more mentally prepared and everything just went
together for him. “Things are coming together for me,” Paveglio
said. “I’m peaking at the right time.”
Junior Kurt Johnson wrestled his way to first place at 158 pounds, winning his
first match, 9-0, over Jon Biggert (LSSU) and by beating Joe Butler (NMU) in
the finals, 8-6. In the third period of the match against Butler, Johnson said
that he put Butler on his back and he felt he should have gotten a pin. “Everyone
else (his teammates) thought it was a pin,” Johnson said. “But you
have to beat the referee too.”
Winning two GLIAC title n two years at the 167-pound weight class, Junior Brad
Morris continued his streak by winning it again. Morris defeated Mike Root (LSSU),
5-2, and Jim Price (GVSU), 8-4, for first place.
Taking first place at 177 pounds, sophomore Doug Mooney had to beat Blake Groenhout
(GVSU), 13-3< and Joe Wypiszenski (NMU), 8-1. In Mooney’s title match,
he said it was close in the beginning, but one maneuver about a minute into
the match made the difference. “We both had to scrap in the beginning,”
Mooney said. “But my first takedown was the killer.”
Winning Ferris’ final title match of the day was 190-pound junior Doug
Chapman, who beat Dave Senkus (LSSU), 10-6, and Jim Koerber (GVSU), 8-6.
Taking second place for Ferris was 118 pound senior Don VanMourik who won his
first match 17-4 over Eric Donders from Lake Superior, then lost in the finals
to Grand Valley’s Roger Singleton, 1-0, on what VanMourik felt was a questionable
call. “The call was very questionable,” Morris said. “It could
have gone either way.”
The Bulldogs remaining four wrestlers all finished third. At 126, junior Tim
Powers lost his first match, 1-1, against Mike Centanni from Lake Superior and
took third place honors by beating Scott Marvin from Grand Valley, 6-3.
Following Powers was 134-pound senior Chris Kocks, who also lost his first match,
12-3, to Bob Berceau (NMU) and finished strong with a win over Rob Wilson (GVSU),
4-1.
Chris Graham at 150 pounds lost to Mike Curley (GVSU), 4-2, then pinned his
next opponent Chris Wells (NMU) at 27 seconds into the match for third place.
At the heavyweight division, senior Tom Walkley lost to Northern Michigan’s
Joe Krumholz, 3-2, then won on the referee’s decision over Mike Gohn (GVSU)
for third place.
“We lost a lot of our first place matches,” Paveglio said.

Ferris beat out 15 teams for the top spot, which included six, which were ranked
in the top 20 of either the NAIA or NCAA Division II.
Terry Schumacher and Big Rapids native Paul Jungck were the only two Bulldogs
to place first place in their weight classes, 158 pounds and 190 pounds respectively.
Schumacher was undefeated in four matches and recorded one pin. He was runner-up
for the “Outstanding Wrestler” honors.
Jungck was also undefeated in winning four decisions. In one match he over came
a 9-1 deficit to win 17-11 and defeated All-American Rick Schoen of West Liberty
State 11-10.

Jungck Major Factor in Victory
BIG RAPIDS – Big Rapids native Paul Jungck recorded a pin in the second
to last match of the day to give Ferris State College its second Division II
Mideast Regional Championship Saturday.
Jungck’s pin, his 27th straight win, gave the Bulldogs 72.5 points to
edge out Northern Michigan University with 72.25 for top honors.
Joining Jungck (190) in qualifying for the NCAA Division II National Championships
to be held Feb. 23-25 at Morgan State University are Terry Schumacher (158),
Gar Chapel (167), Joe Johnson (134), Dave Bonifas (177) and Joel Mikazes (hwt).
Schumacher and Chapel will be making return trips. Schumacher finished sixth
at last year’s nationals to claim All-America honors. He and Jungck were
the only two Bulldog wrestlers to qualify for the nationals by winning their
weight classes.
Jungck and Schumacher currently share the school record for the most wins in
a season, with 41. Schumacher holds the school record for pins in one season
with 23.
FSC coach Dan Ley also received regional honors by being named c0-coach of the
year along with Mike Duroe of Northern Michigan.
Johnson, Chapel, Bonifas and Mikazes all were runners-up in their weight class.
Johnson lost a 15-7 decision in the finals after recording a pin at 2:40 in
the opening round and an 8-7 decision in the semi finals.
Schumacher won his way to the championship with pins at 6:25 and 1:50 and then
a 10-0 decision in the finals.
Chapel recorded an opening round pin at 4:45 and then a 12-6 decision before
losing a close decision, 2-1, in the championship match.
Bonifas got an opening round bye before winning 10-3 and then losing 9-1 in
the finals.
Jungck claimed a 20-1 decision in his opening round and went on to win 13-4
and then record a pin in 6:15 of the finals match.
Mikazes received a bye before pinning an opponent at 1:20 of the semi finals
and then lost 11-7 in the finals.

One-Armed Winner
By Larry Middlemas
Ferris State wrestling coach Jim Miller is trying to qualify for the Olympics
and Pan-American Games with one arm practically tied behind his back.
Despite a shoulder injury, he confirmed his No. 2 ranking among Greco-Roman
163-pounders at the World Team Trials in Oak Lawn, Ill., by beating No. 3 Dale
Oliver of Albany N.Y., 8-7 and 6-5.
“This is the best I’ve ever wrestled considering the circumstances
and the importance of the competition,” Miller said.
Miller forfeited to top-ranked Dave Butler of the Naval Academy because of the
injury, but it didn’t affect his rank.

Ferris
State: XSports Press Releases Press releases are listed chronologically starting from the most recent |
Ferris State University: Sports Press Release (Nov. 15, 1988) Walter Grable
BIG RAPIDS – Head coach Jim Miller is both optimistic
and cautious about his Ferris State University wrestling team heading into the
1988-89 season.
His optimism stems from the fact that four NCAA Division II All-Americans have
returned to the squad. Two of the All-Americans are ranked first nationally
in their weight classes and the other two are ranked second in their divisions.
The Bulldogs are coming off their most successful season in history, posting
an 8-1 dual meet record and placing fourth at the NCAA II National Championships.
However, Miller is cautious because outside of his top four wrestlers, he has
an inexperienced team.
“We have six new people and that can be a discrepancy,” Miller said.
“Our team is half experienced and half rookies. If one of our top wrestlers
suffers an injury, it could hurt the season.”
Miller’s “big four,” often referred to as “Murderers’
Row,” starts with 158-pounder Kurt Johnson (Morenci) and continues with
167-pounder Brad Morris (Warren-Mott), 177-pounder Doug Mooney (Burlington,
Ont.) and 190-pounder Doug Chapman (Belleville). They combined for a 118-31
record and 26 pins last season.
For Morris, a senior, it was business as usual last year as he captured his
third “Outstanding Wrestler” award in as many seasons at Ferris
with a 34-8 record. A two-time Div. II All-American, Morris’ second place
national finish as a sophomore is the highest NCAA finish in the history of
Bulldog wrestling. He is currently ranked first nationally in his 167-pound
weight division and is a three-time Great Lakes Conference champion and a two-time
NCAA II Mideast champion.
Another talented Bulldog is Chapman, who is also a two-time Div. II All-American.
Chapman was second on the team in wins last season with a 31-10 record and led
the Bulldogs with 12 pins. Since Chapman’s arrival at Ferris three years
ago, no wrestler for the Bulldogs has won more matches (86). He finished fourth
in the country last year when he won GLIAC and Mideast Regional championships
and holds a No. 2 national ranking at 190-pounds.
Joining Chapman as a No. 2 ranked wrestler is Johnson, a senior 158-pounder
who was 27-9 as a junior. He was named FSU’s “Most Improved Wrestler”
last season when he claimed third place at the NCAA Tournament and made the
All-America team. Johnson finished first in such tournaments as the Michigan
Open, The GLIAC Tournament, the Mideast Regionals, the Midwest Classic, and
the Grand Rapids Open.
The fourth returning All-American is Mooney, a former Marine and a candidate
for a national championship at 177-pounds. Mooney, ranked first nationally,
was 26-4 last season and matched Johnson’s third place NCAA finish after
losing to the eventual national champion in overtime. Mooney finished first
in the Michigan Open, The GLIAC Tournament, the Mideast Regionals, and the Grand
Rapids Open.
These four wrestlers are Miller’s main men, but a championship season
will revolve around the success from the rest of the lineup. Four freshmen,
one junior, and one senior make up the balance of the early season starting
card.
Eric Norman (Algonac), a senior), will open the season at 142 pounds and will
be counted on to lend valuable experience to the team. Regi Ratliff (Maywood,
IL / Proviso East), a transfer from Triton College, starts the season at 126
pounds.
The four freshmen Miller will put into competition are Jamie Mathy (118), a
two-time Class A all-stater from Hazel Park; Paul Capen (134), a red-shirt freshman
from Otsego; Brian Cowles (15)/Springport); and heavyweight Andy Samaan, a red-shirt
frosh from Greenville.
“To be the best in the country, everything has to come together,”
Miller said. “We have to do the best job we can and avoid the little disasters
that come along.”
A rugged schedule that started with the Michigan State Invitational (Nov. 6)
will include trips to the Ohio Open (Nov. 19-20), the Las Vegas Open (Dec. 2-3),
the Midlands Championships (Dec. 29-30), the Midwest Classic (Jan. 6-7) and
double dual action at Michigan State with Minnesota (Feb. 4). Ferris’s
home schedule features dual meets against Lake Superior (Dec. 14), Eastern Michigan
(Jan. 27), Grand Valley (Feb. 1) and Central Michigan (Feb. 11). The Bulldogs
will host the NCAA Div. II Mideast Regional Championships on Feb. 18.

(Miller selected for all-star coaching honor)
Ferris State University wrestling coach Jim Miller has been selected as a 1989
All-Star coach for the “National Wrestling Coaches Association Classic,”
to be hosted by the University of Pennsylvania on Feb. 7.
The classic will feature NCAA Division I wrestlers who are first or second in
their national weight divisions.
“It’s an honor to be able to coach some of the nest wrestlers in
the nation,” Miller said. “This reflects well on the quality of
the Ferris wrestling team. The rest of the nation is slowly, but surely taking
notice of our wrestling program.”
Miller coached the Bulldogs to a fourth place NCAA Div. II national finish last
year when he was named the Mideast Region “Coach of the Year.” He
was a finalist for the 1988 Summer Olympic Team in the 163-pound Greco-Roman
wrestling division.

Ferris State University: Sports Press Release (Apr. 13, 1987) Ted Halm
BIG RAPIDS – Sophomore Brad Morris (Warren Mott), the
NCAA Division II national runner-up in the 167-pound weight class, has been
named the “Outstanding Wrestler” for the 1986-87 Ferris State College
Bulldogs.
Morris, 30-10 this year for a Ferris team that won a share of the Great Lakes
Conference title and the NCAA Division II Mideast Regional championship, earned
NCAA All-America recognition for his second place national finish. He also became
the first Bulldog wrestler to qualify for the NCAA Division I Championships,
where he lost in the first round.
Joining Morris in the All-America circle with high national finishes were junior
118-pounder Don VanMourik (Owosso), senior 177-pounder John Solomonson (Grayling)
and sophomore 190-pounder Doug Chapman (Belleville). As a team, Ferris placed
seventh at the Div. II Nationals to achieve the best wrestling finish in school
history.
Ferris wrestling coach Jim Miller honored senior Marty Foote (Shepherd) and
Solomonson with “Captains’ Awards” for their strong leadership.
Chris Graham (Shelby), a 150-pounder who was honored as FSC’s “Freshman
of the Year,” also earned the “Most Pins Award” with 14 to
boost his 19-15 record.
The “Most Improved Wrestler” award went to 158-pound sophomore Kurt
Johnson (Morenci), who finished with a 20-14 record and narrowly missed qualifying
for the NCAA Div. II Championships.
Conference champions for the Bulldogs include Foote (his second title), Morris
(second title) and Solomonson (third title; won two previously at Oakland University,
where he was All-American in 1986). Foote joined VanMourik, Morris, Solomonson
and Chapman as an NCAA Div. II national qualifier.
Ferris’ final dual record for the 1986-87 was 8-2-1 (4-1-1 in the GLIAC),
including three shutouts and a victory over Eastern Michigan University.

Ferris State University: Sports Press Release (Jan. 17, 1986) J. Louise LaFreniere
BIG RAPIDS – Ferris State College wrestler Doug Chapman
is having a typical freshman season. With a current record of 14-12, Chapman
has fallen to weaker opponents and has enjoyed some unexpected upsets.
Recruited from a strong wrestling program in Belleville by FSC coach Jim Miller,
Chapman has some big shoes to fill in the Bulldogs’ 190-pound weight class.
“The past four years we have had an All-American at 190,” Miller
said. “Doug has a chance of making All-American, but he will have to work
hard every time he hits the mat.”
Chapman is following in the footsteps of two-time All-Americans Woody Brown
and Paul Jungck. Brown gained national recognition during the 1981-83 seasons
followed by Jungck in 1983-85.
According to Miller, Chapman has been plagued by freshman mistakes. “His
potential is enormous,” explained Miller, “if he could just find
some consistency.”
Chapman agrees with Miller’s evaluation. “I usually wrestle better
when something’s on the line,” he explained, “and other times,
I get beat by a weaker guy.”
Chapman psyched himself for a match against Central Michigan’s defending
Mid-American Conference champion Kent Vanderloon, and when it was all over,
Chapman had a 4-3 win.
“I just wanted to beat him badly,” explained Chapman. “He’s
a fifth-year senior and beating him would say something for me.”
Chapman also defeated defending Great Lakes Conference champion Mike Arnold
of Lake Superior with a 12-0 decision. “I felt I wrestled strong against
Arnold,” said Chapman.
Chapman feels his strongest advantage over his opponents is his attitude.
“You just have to believe you can win,” he explained.
A wrestler since age nine, Chapman credits his former high school coach, Jerry
Malecek, for much of his success. Chapman finished third in the state as a senior
last season and was an AAU national freestyle champion last summer.
A pre-law student, Chapman has adjusted well to Ferris and the Bulldog wrestling
program.
I came to Ferris because I received a good offer and I knew I would get good
coaching,” explained Chapman. “Coach Miller really knows what he’s
doing and he has helped me improve my conditioning and technique.”
Chapman is confident the Ferris squad will be successful.
“We’re really starting to come together,” said Chapman, “and
I usually wrestle my best at the end of the season.”
The highlight of the season for Chapman and the Bulldogs will occur Feb. 7,
when Ferris hosts the Great Lakes Conference Championships. Chapman will have
a chance to qualify for the NCAA Division II Championships when the Bulldogs
travel to Ashland, Ohio (Feb. 14-15) for the NCAA Div II Mideast Regionals.

Ferris State University: Sports Press Release (July 2, 1985) Ted Halm
BIG RAPIDS – Ferris State College wrestler Paul Jungck
(Big Rapids) was announced as an Academic All-American when the at-large college
division team was unveiled Monday (July 1) in Boston at the national convention
of the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Jungck, who graduated with distinction this spring with a 3.43 grade point average
in social services, was selected to the third-team all-academic squad by a national
vote of sports information directors. He became eligible for the ballot when
he earned a spot on the CoSIDA District IV all-academic team last month.
Jungck is a two-time wrestling All-American, having placed sixth at the NCAA
Division II Championships last March in the 190-pound weight class. During his
junior season, he reached the national semi-finals and placed third with an
overall record of 45-6. This season, Jungck had a 28-16 record and won his second
straight Mideast Regional championship.
Jungck, the men’s “Bulldog of the Year” at Ferris, is only
the third athlete in school history to win All-America honors on both the athletic
and academic fronts. Previous dual winners include baseball’s Joe Compton
(1976) and golf’s Tim Miller (1980-81).
