#1: XXDave Surofchek - 190 lbs XX(Class
of 1993) |
Dave Surofchek |
X | Ferris State University Athletic “Hall
of Fame” Member - 2003 Dave left Big Rapids in the fall of 1993
and moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan. During his time in Grand Rapids,
Dave would leave for Lansing at 3:30 am, six (6) days a week to work in
a factory making flywheels for cars (utilizing his accounting degree…)
The main reason Dave worked there is because it provided him an opportunity
to wrestled with Michigan State assistant coach Dave Dean in the morning
at 5:00 am, in hopes of climbing the Greco-Roman national team ladder.
After work Dave returned to MSU and trained with the college team. By
the time Dave returned home it was after 7:00 pm. This schedule lasted
a year and a half until Dave was invited to live and train at the U.S.
Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO. Dave jumped at the chance
to train full-time and leave his insane regime he had become accustomed
to in the previous 18 months. The first two (2) years Dave lived at the
training center, he was fortunate to live down the hall from college teammates
Dan Hutcheson and Jeff Schering. In summary, Dave lived at the USOTC for
seven (7) years, traveling all over the world, making several Greco-Roman
national teams as well as traveling to the Sydney Olympic Games as an
alternate. During these games Dave got to watch his training partner Rulon
Gardner accomplish the “Miracle on the Mat” with his win in
the gold medal match against Alexander Karelin of Russia. After the Sydney
games Dave retired from wrestling and began working at Smith Barney as
a Financial Consultant and Vice-President of Investments. |

#2: XXCory Lyons- 126 lbs XX(Class
of 1996) |
| X | Name: Cory
Lyons XXHometown:
Flint, Mi XXHigh
School: Carman-Ainsworth How did you end up at Ferris State?: Money, and a GREAT recruiting visit. My brother and sister attended Ferris State in the 80’s, so I was slightly familiar with the campus. What dorm did you live in at Ferris?: I lived in Henderson for two (2) years because it was right next to the wrestling complex. Then I moved off campus to the infamous “Rose Wrestling House." I think Miller showed up there a few times to check up on us… Most memorable moment at Ferris State (wrestling): Pining a kid from Indiana that only had one leg (this was at Regionals). "I’m serious… he was as strong as Surofchek." Most memorable moment at Ferris State (other): Wow. There are so many. There was the night that my cousin and I got into the Pike fraternity’s kitchen and ate all of their food. Cargill, my cousin, and I ate like kings that night. There’s the time Cargill left me when I got caught dumpster diving at Dunk’en Doughnuts. I had to beg the owner not to call the police. It only took me about 1.5 hours to clean the mess up myself. When I got back to the house Cargill was sleeping on the couch with a trash bag of doughnuts next to him. Oh, and of course anytime McCourt wore a wrestling singlet out and about. Degree(s) from Ferris State:
What have you been up to since leaving Ferris State?: I worked as a project manager for a consulting firm in Detroit after graduation. After 2 years I was so burned out I decided to move. I loaded up my truck and moved to California. After a short stint as a personal trainer, I got involved with a start up internet company. That took me to San Francisco for about a year. But ultimately I decided southern California was the place for me. I moved back and called on a friend for work. He helped me get a job on “Dog Eat Dog” and ever since then I knew I wanted to be a producer. Current Occupation: Producer,
Krasnow Productions Spouse (if any):

"Beef" Faulkner - HWT
XX(Class of 1993)
|
| X | Name: Mike
“Beef” FaulknerXXHometown:
Mishawaka, IN XXHigh
School: Mishawaka Wrestling: 1987 wrestling team captain, held record for most pins in a season with 28, 2X wrestling state qualifier and 1987 Indiana State High School Wrestling HWT Runner-up. Career High School record 90-11, 2X Freestyle State Champion and 1987 Freestyle National Champion. How did you end up at Ferris State?: I attended Grand Rapids JC for two years and FSU Heavyweight coach, Mike Holcomb was my neighbor in Grand Rapids. Mike worked out with me often in Grand Rapids and encouraged me to attend FSU. What dorm did you live in at Ferris?: Bond Hall for one year. Most memorable moment at Ferris State (wrestling): Probably the National Championships in Greeley Colorado (1992) when we went skiing, Surf (Dave Surofchek) blew out his knee his first trip down the bunny hill, and we got snowed in at the top of the mountain. Coach Miller had to pay for our one hotel room, (which must have cost him a small fortune) where we all slept together. The snoring was outrageous and the stench was unbearable! Nonetheless, we all enjoyed swimming and hot tubing outdoors in the blizzard! The guys could eat so they were all happy! Most memorable moment at Ferris State (other): Our trip to Las Vegas in 1991. Surf and I could not lose playing “Reddog” and ended up staying out way past Coach Miller’s curfew. (Sorry Coach Miller, not sure if you knew about that one!) Anyway, as broke college students we were able to purchase Christmas gifts for the first and only time while in college. I have so many more great memories of Ferris other than the two that I have shared. I look back now and think of all my friends and particularly my teammate friends that I often think about but never get a chance to talk with. Now is my chance to say hello and to contact me if you are reading this. I would love to hear from all of you! Accomplishments at Ferris State: 1993 Graduate, and 2X HWT All-American Degree(s) from Ferris State: *Bachelors of Science – Recreation Leadership Management What have you been up to since leaving Ferris State?: Still involved with my favorite sport of wrestling. I was head coach for two seasons at our local Junior High School and than was hired in as the Head Coach at South Bend Adams High School 1995-98. Due to my occupation, I resigned from coaching and began officiating wrestling. I have been honored to officiate at the junior high, high school and collegiate wrestling levels and officiated two Indiana High School State Championships. I have also been blessed with a great family, my wife Monique for 10 years, and two sons Austin 7, and Alex 6. With a family, we do many things together including spending the summer weekends in our RV on the lake. Fish, swim and relax with good friends and family. Since leaving FSU, I have also been very involved in my career, for over 12 years now, in local government, with the City of Mishawaka. My position within the Parks and Recreation Department is a very rewarding experience. Implementing positive programs, activities and services to our local citizens and community is my mission, and feel it is achieved annually. Current Occupation: Superintendent of Parks and Recreation-City of Mishawaka Interesting aspects or stories from your job: I have a great job that I have truly enjoyed for over 12 years now. I have a great management team and a staff of 36 full-time and 77 part-time employees. We are ultimately responsible for maintaining and improving over 1,000 acres of park and open space land, 32 parks, community center, landscape division, 2 public pools and ice hockey rink, 18 hole golf and disc golf course, winter tubing hill, and responsible for multiple special events, community programs and activities as well as sports leagues for youth, adult and seniors citizens. Spouse (if any): The love of my life, Mrs. Monique Faulkner (married 10 years and together for 19 years)XXChildren: (include ages if possible): Stud #1 Michael “Austin” Faulkner age 7, and Stud #2 Alex Michael Faulkner age 6 Interesting stories or aspects of your family: Blessed to have a healthy family. Monique works as an Insurance Rep for Liberty Mutual Insurance in Mishawaka and loves her job. The boys, well, there boys and best of friends. They are 12 months apart and do everything together, i.e. play, fight, sleep etc. And yes, they do like wrestling and are participating on their own free level of interest. I promise no pressure from dad, just a simple introduction to them about our great sport! Current Residence: Mishawaka, Indiana Hobbies: Tinkering and driving my father’s 1969 Roadrunner (mint condition) Dad treated it like gold! I love my annual “guys” trip (Labor Day week every year) up to our cabin in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario to fish. Anyone interested? I still workout a little and help a little at Mishawaka High. As I said before, I am very involved in high school officiating. I also do play my fare share amount of poker when I can, and feel sorry for the guys since I take their money all of the time. (Yeah right!) Enjoy company with friends and partying by the pool. Lastly, I love landscaping and working in my yard. My passion is my water garden pond. Tearing it down every year and building back differently, making it bigger and better with large cascading waterfalls. Future Goals: Continue to provide a good life for my family and lead my boys down the right road, so that they can grow up to be responsible men an asset to our world. Continue my career in local government until I feel I have accomplished everything that I had set out to do. Continue to advance in officiating and maybe one day officiate the NCAA Division I, II, III National Championships. Hit the power-ball and retire on a yacht cruising the Caribbean. Anything else to add: I would like to encourage all wrestling alums to attend our annual reunion that is held the same weekend as the Hall of Fame Inductions (end of September). It will be tough for many to get there since some of you live so far away. However, it would be nice seeing you again, and meeting those of you who I consider a brother in wrestling, that I have not met before! What dorm did you live in at Ferris State? Lived in Puterbaugh freshman year and Henderson during sophomore year.
